Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his two-day visit to India, was treated to an elaborate and entirely vegetarian state dinner hosted by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday. The ceremonial meal was curated to highlight India’s diverse culinary traditions, served on a traditional thali that blended flavours from Kashmir to the southern and eastern regions of the country.
The dinner opened with Murungelai Chaaru, a tangy South Indian rasam that set the tone for a regional flavour journey. Appetisers included Gucchi Doon Chetin, a delicacy of stuffed Kashmiri morels paired with walnut chutney; Kaale Chane Ke Shikampuri, a pan-grilled kebab made of black gram; and vegetable Jhol Momo served with a spicy Himalayan chutney. Together, they offered a pan-Indian tasting experience that celebrated traditional ingredients.
The main course comprised Zafrani Paneer Roll, Paalak Methi Mattar Ka Saag, Tandoori Bharwan Aloo, Achaari Baingan, and Yellow Dal Tadka. These were paired with Dry Fruit and Saffron Pulao and a range of Indian breads including Laccha Parantha, Magaz Naan, Satanaj Roti, Missi Roti, and Biscuity Roti. Ending the meal on a sweet note, the dessert spread featured Badam Ka Halwa, Kesar-Pista Kulfi, fresh fruits, and accompaniments like Gur Sandesh, Murakku, pickles, and salads. Putin was also served a selection of fresh juices, from pomegranate and orange to carrot and ginger.
The evening included a special musical performance by the Rashtrapati Bhavan Naval Band, blending Indian classical pieces such as Amritavarshini, Yaman, and Desh with Russian favourites like Kalinka and excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. A popular Hindi film tune, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, added a cultural bridge.
During the event, Putin praised the strength of India-Russia ties, stressing cooperation across politics, security, trade, energy, and education. He reiterated that both nations aim to build a “fairer and just world order.” The visit concluded with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar seeing him off at the Delhi airport.
