Prohibitory orders were imposed in Manipur's Lilong area following a violent attack in which Md Asker Ali, president of the BJP Minority Morcha unit in Manipur, witnessed his house being burned down. Ali had posted on social media in support of the Waqf Amendment Act, which sparked mass outrage among Muslim-dominated localities in the Imphal Valley.
The attack happened on Sunday night when a large mob of 7,000 to 8,000 attacked and torched Ali's residence in the community of Lilong Sambrukhong Mamei.
There were no fatalities, but there was extensive damage. In the aftermath of the assault, Ali issued an apology video, withdrawing his support for the Act and condemning it.
To maintain law and order, the authority of Thoubal district had put prohibitory orders in place under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which forbade public assembling of five or more persons and the public carrying of firearms.
The Waqf Act was protested in other areas as well, including Kshatri Awang Leikai and Kairang Muslim in Imphal East, to which security forces were deployed in a bid not to create trouble again.u
