Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati has denounced the spate of vandalism on graves in Nagpur, Maharashtra. She faulted the destruction, saying it is counterproductive to communal harmony and appealed to the state government to act sternly against the perpetrators.
In a social media platform X post, she said, "It is not proper to destroy or destroy anyone's mausoleum or grave in Maharashtra because this is ruining the mutual brotherhood, peace, and harmony there. " She also called on the authorities to "take strict action against such hooligan elements, particularly in Nagpur."
The Nagpur unrest flared following demands by some right-wing groups for the demolition of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's tomb. It worsened further as rumors spread about a religious book having been desecrated during a protest rally.
Violence in the Chitnis Park locality of Mahal involved incidents of stone-pelting, burning, and damage to property.
Authorities took steps to impose a curfew and implement Section 144 to restore order.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis denounced the violence and pledged that the guilty will be brought under strict actions. More than 50 persons have been detained as of yet, and intense police deployment still persists in affected zones.
The demand for hard action by Mayawati gives weight to keeping peace intact and stopping further disorder.
The state of affairs is monitored closely with an aim for re-establishment of order as well as communal peace in Nagpur.
