Mumbai, Feb 14: One person was killed and three others injured after a portion of an under-construction metro bridge collapsed in Mumbai’s Mulund area on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred around 12:15 pm on the busy LBS Road, in front of the Johnson and Johnson factory, when part of a parapet from the elevated metro structure fell onto vehicles passing below.
According to officials, the falling debris struck an auto rickshaw and a car, causing severe damage. The deceased has been identified as Ramdhan Yadav. Authorities said Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav, 45, sustained critical injuries and has been admitted to the intensive care unit. The two other injured persons — Mahendra Pratap Yadav, 52, and Deepa Ruhiya, 40 — are reported to be stable and receiving treatment.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s disaster control wing stated that the collapsed portion of the parapet measured approximately 6 by 4 feet. Emergency services rushed to the spot shortly after the incident, and rescue operations were launched immediately.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is overseeing the metro project, said that all necessary medical assistance is being provided to the injured. Officials from the metro project team are at the site, coordinating with the BMC and disaster management authorities to secure the area and prevent further risk.
In a statement, the MMRDA confirmed that an inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the collapse. The investigation will examine construction safety protocols and assess the structural stability of the ongoing project.
The incident has once again raised concerns about safety standards at major infrastructure sites in the city, especially in densely populated and high-traffic areas like LBS Road.
