Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his two-day visit to Ethiopia on Wednesday, departing for Oman as the final leg of his three-nation tour. During his stay, Modi received a warm welcome from Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, who personally drove him from the airport to his hotel and, in a rare gesture, once again drove him to the airport for departure.
Earlier in the day, Modi and Abiy Ahmed planted a sapling in Addis Ababa under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, symbolizing the shared commitment of both nations toward environmental conservation. Modi also addressed the Joint Session of the Ethiopian Parliament, drawing parallels between India’s national song ‘Vande Mataram’ and Ethiopia’s anthem, ‘March Forward, Dear Mother Ethiopia’. He emphasized that both countries refer to their homeland as “mother,” reflecting a deep cultural connection and mutual respect.
In his address, Modi highlighted the ancient heritage of Ethiopia, noting that some of the earliest footprints of species, including the famous ‘Lucy of Dinkinesh,’ originated there. He linked this shared history to India’s philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ meaning the world is one family, underscoring the importance of global unity and shared destiny.
Modi further engaged with Ethiopian ministers and MPs, reinforcing India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties based on trust, cooperation, and shared values. During his visit, he also laid a wreath at the Adwa Victory Monument and visited the Adwa Museum to learn more about Ethiopia’s historical legacy.
As a mark of respect and recognition, Modi was conferred Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia.’ Expressing his gratitude, Modi acknowledged the warmth of the Ethiopian government and people. His visit not only strengthened diplomatic ties but also highlighted cultural, historical, and environmental collaboration between India and Ethiopia, leaving a lasting impression on both nations.
This visit marks another milestone in India-Ethiopia relations, emphasizing friendship, mutual respect, and a shared vision for the future.
