New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the recent visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has laid a strong foundation for a renewed and forward-looking partnership between India and Canada.
Responding to a video message posted by Mr Carney on social media platform X, Mr Modi said the visit marked not just a reset but the beginning of a new phase in bilateral relations. “Your visit has built a strong foundation for a truly renewed partnership. I look forward to working together with you to build a future defined by trust, growth, innovation and shared prosperity for the people of our nations,” the Prime Minister wrote.
Mr Carney was in India from February 27 to March 2 on an official visit aimed at revitalising ties between the two countries. In his remarks, the Canadian leader described the trip as an expansion of the Canada-India partnership, driven by fresh ambition and mutual confidence.
During their discussions, the two sides sealed key agreements, including cooperation in the supply of uranium and critical minerals. Both nations also agreed to work towards concluding a comprehensive economic partnership agreement at the earliest.
Beyond trade, the leaders pledged to deepen collaboration in defence, critical and emerging technologies, renewable energy, education and the development of small and modular nuclear reactors. Officials said the talks reflected a shared intent to diversify cooperation and strengthen economic resilience.
Mr Carney was accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising senior officials and business representatives. He also met leading corporate executives, financial experts and innovators from both countries, underlining the importance of private-sector engagement in driving bilateral growth.
The visit comes at a time when India and Canada are seeking to rebuild momentum in their ties and expand cooperation in strategic sectors. With a large Indian diaspora in Canada and growing trade links, both governments have indicated their willingness to chart a stable and mutually beneficial path forward.
Officials on both sides described the visit as constructive, with a clear roadmap emerging for stronger engagement across political, economic and technological domains in the coming months.
