Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman’s sudden exit from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has sparked major controversy, revealing deep cracks in cricketing ties between India and Bangladesh. The left-arm pacer was released from his contract with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) following direct instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a move that reportedly bypassed consultation with several BCCI officials and the IPL Governing Council.
According to reports, Mustafizur, who was bought for INR 9.20 crore during the IPL 2026 auction, was released after a decision taken at the highest level of the BCCI. A senior BCCI official was quoted as saying that many within the board were unaware of the move until it appeared in the media. “There was no discussion. No suggestions were taken from our side,” the official said, indicating internal disagreement over the process.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision, stating that due to “recent developments,” the board instructed KKR to release the Bangladesh international from their squad. While the BCCI has not officially elaborated on the developments, the decision comes amid escalating political and social tensions between India and Bangladesh.
The fallout was immediate. The Bangladesh government announced a nationwide ban on the telecast of IPL matches until further notice, calling it a response to the treatment of their player. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is also reportedly exploring the possibility of shifting Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2026 matches out of India.
The situation has further intensified due to recent violent incidents targeting Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, which have added to strained bilateral relations. Amid the controversy, KKR and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan have also faced backlash on social media, despite the franchise acting on BCCI orders.
Mustafizur’s release now stands as more than just a cricketing decision it has become a symbol of a growing diplomatic and sporting standoff.
