New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said that Left Wing Extremism (LWE), which once posed a grave internal security challenge to the country, is on the verge of becoming history. He credited the relentless efforts of India’s police and security forces for the steady decline in Naxalite activity across affected regions.
Speaking at the Police Commemoration Day ceremony held at the National Police Memorial in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri, Singh laid a wreath in honour of the personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty and took a ceremonial salute. He said the bravery, dedication, and discipline of the country’s police forces have played a crucial role in maintaining peace and internal stability.
“The success of the campaign against Naxalites can be assessed from the fact that the Maoists, who once took up arms against the state, are today surrendering and integrating themselves into the mainstream of development,” Singh said. He emphasised that the government’s consistent efforts, supported by the courage and professionalism of security personnel, have significantly weakened the movement’s influence and operational capacity.
The Defence Minister also noted that the combined approach of strong security measures and inclusive development has brought visible results. Improved connectivity, better governance, and welfare initiatives in erstwhile LWE-affected areas have encouraged many former extremists to abandon violence and join mainstream society.
On the occasion, Singh paid rich tributes to police personnel who laid down their lives protecting the nation, saying their contribution ensures that India remains secure and united. He added that the sacrifices of these brave men and women inspire the country to remain steadfast against all threats, whether internal or external.
With a marked reduction in violence and surrender of cadres, the government believes the long fight against Naxalism is nearing its end. “The day is not far when Naxalism will be completely eradicated from Indian soil,” Singh said, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to strengthening peace, security, and development across all regions.
