Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s husband, Durga Prasad Subedi, 74, has been discharged from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital and is set to be flown to New Delhi for further medical care after showing no significant improvement. Subedi had been admitted since last Thursday with multiple health issues, including a urinary tract infection, low sodium levels, and stomach-related complications, hospital sources confirmed. Despite CT scans and MRI tests, doctors were unable to pinpoint a specific cause, prompting the family to seek a second opinion in India.
Personal physician Man Bahadur KC confirmed Subedi’s transfer, emphasizing the family’s decision to explore advanced treatment options. Subedi, a former youth leader of the Nepali Congress, shares a long personal and political history with PM Karki, whom he met while studying at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
Notably, Subedi played a role in Nepal’s first plane hijacking in 1973. Along with two other Nepali Congress cadres, he hijacked a Royal Nepal Airlines flight from Biratnagar to Kathmandu to raise funds for an armed struggle against the monarchy under King Mahendra. The incident, masterminded by former PM Girija Prasad Koirala, involved forcing the pilot to land in Forbesganj, Bihar, and seizing government funds. Subedi later recounted the event in his book Biman Bidroha.
Prime Minister Karki, while addressing the nation on governance priorities, reiterated the government’s commitment to creating employment, improving quality of life, ensuring transparency, controlling corruption, and fostering development.
Subedi’s transfer to India marks a critical step in his ongoing treatment, with hopes of stabilization and recovery in a more specialized medical setting. Authorities have not disclosed the exact hospital in Delhi where he will be admitted.
