Punjab Police will further fortify the second line of defense at border villages with the installation of more than 2,100 advanced CCTV cameras to oversee and keep out cross-border smugglers and anti-national forces.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav made the announcement during a night domination operation conducted in the border belt.
The DGP reached at midnight and checked important police checkpoints at Golden Gate, Amritsar Railway Station, Chheharta within the city police commissionerate, and Gharinda under rural police regime.
He was joined by high-ranking officials, such as Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Deputy Commissioner of Police Alam Vijay Singh, DCP Jagjit Singh Walia, DIG Border Range Satinder Singh, and SSP Amritsar (Rural) Maninder Singh.
Addressing media persons, DGP Yadav informed that aside from CCTV cameras, the government of Punjab has also approached the Centre for sanction to install an anti-drone system along the International Border with Pakistan to face the growing danger of drones for smuggling weapons and drugs.
The anti-drone system will be installed in coordination with central agencies and the Border Security Force (BSF) to end drone-based smuggling activities," he stated, adding that talks are being held with various stakeholders in this matter.
The DGP also said that after a statewide crackdown on drug peddling, the Punjab Police have initiated 'Operation Satark' (night domination) to trace and arrest criminal elements.
"In the past month alone, Punjab Police have made big breakthroughs by arresting major players in the drug trade," he added.
On being questioned about the reported involvement of police officers in the drug trade, the DGP clarified that stringent action would be taken. "No one will be spared—whether civilian or cop—if found involved in drug smuggling," he claimed.
