Packed Venue, Blocked Exits! Multiple Safety Lapses Behind Deadly Goa Nightclub Inferno

A late-night blaze at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in North Goa’s Arpora turned a crowded weekend gathering into one of the state’s worst tragedies, claiming 25 lives and injuring six others. The fire, which broke out around midnight on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, tore through the tightly packed club, exposing a series of alarming safety violations.

Preliminary investigations suggest the flames originated on the first floor, where around 100 visitors were dancing, leading to widespread panic. As people rushed downstairs in an attempt to escape, many became trapped inside the kitchen area due to congestion and small exit doors. Eyewitnesses also recalled a fire erupting from the roof, followed by a cylinder blast that intensified the blaze.

The structure of the nightclub further contributed to the disaster. Officials revealed that the premises were built using flammable materials, including temporary palm-leaf constructions that caught fire instantly. The club had only a narrow access route, and both the entry and exit points were restricted, offering little room for evacuation. Fire engines were forced to stop nearly 400 metres away because of the constricted approach, delaying rescue operations.

Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant confirmed that the club lacked multiple mandatory permissions and had been issued demolition notices earlier by the local panchayat and the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority. An FIR has now been registered against the nightclub owner and general manager, with action promised against officials who allowed operations despite the violations.

The tragedy has sparked statewide concern over fire safety in entertainment venues, with calls for stricter inspections and accountability. Early visuals and survivor accounts paint a grim picture of chaos, confusion and an avoidable loss of life raising urgent questions about regulatory oversight and preparedness.
