Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of carrying out “unprovoked firing” along the Durand Line, prompting Islamabad to issue a stern warning of a severe response if such incidents continue. The latest border tension comes amid ongoing disputes over security and cross-border movement in the region.
According to the Pakistan military, Afghan forces allegedly opened fire in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s border areas, targeting Pakistani positions without prior provocation. No casualties were immediately reported, but officials described the action as a serious violation of bilateral border agreements.
In an official statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Pakistan reserves the right to respond decisively to protect its sovereignty and border security. “Pakistan is committed to safeguarding its territory, and any repeated violations will be met with proportionate measures,” the statement read.
The Pakistani authorities also reported that they had reinforced border posts and increased patrols along the affected areas to prevent further escalation. Local residents in the region were advised to remain indoors and exercise caution.
While Islamabad has historically maintained communication channels with Afghan border authorities to de-escalate tensions, repeated incidents have strained relations, with both sides accusing each other of cross-border provocations. Analysts suggest that these skirmishes could complicate ongoing peace and counter-terrorism efforts in the region.
Pakistan’s warning comes amid rising concerns about militant movements and smuggling along the porous border. Officials emphasized that unilateral military actions undermine trust and could escalate into wider confrontation if not addressed diplomatically.
Afghanistan has yet to formally respond to the latest allegations. Previous clashes along the border have prompted bilateral talks mediated by regional partners, but tensions remain high.
Observers note that the Durand Line, which separates the two countries, has historically been a flashpoint for security incidents, partly due to ethnic and tribal overlaps as well as the presence of non-state armed groups.
Pakistan’s statement stressed that it prefers peaceful resolution through dialogue, but also highlighted its readiness for military response if violations continue. The situation remains fluid, and both sides face international scrutiny to avoid escalation in the strategically sensitive border region.
