Panjab University students have held a hunger strike in protest at the alleged lack of action by the authorities after second-year computer science student Aditya Thakur was stabbed to death at a concert by singer Masoom Sharma on March 28, 2025, at the South Campus of Panjab University. The attack outraged and demanded action.
Four students, Sahil, Lavish, Raghav, and Udey, have been arrested in connection with the murder, but protests continue as students and Thakur's family members want all of them arrested and tougher action against the perpetrators of the security failure. The Chandigarh administration has ordered a magisterial probe to investigate the incidents that resulted in the stabbing and identify security lapses.
Activists call for the resignation of leaders such as Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Student Welfare and the establishment of security to ensure future avoidance of cases of this sort.
That such an occurrence was allowed to result in a hunger strike suggests heightened outrage among the students towards a response perceived to be halfhearted on both sides of the university and police establishments.
