India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved a major milestone on social media by becoming the first world leader to cross 100 million followers on Instagram, highlighting his unmatched digital reach and influence among global political figures. The Prime Minister joined Instagram in 2014, the same year he assumed office as India’s Prime Minister. Over the past decade, his account has steadily grown into one of the most followed political profiles in the world, attracting millions of users from India and abroad. Through the platform, Modi frequently shares photographs and videos from official meetings, international visits, cultural events, public outreach initiatives, and personal moments from his daily life. These posts often offer followers a glimpse into his activities as the head of government while also presenting lighter moments from his travels and interactions with people. The milestone further cements Modi’s position as the most followed global political leader on Instagram. His follower count significantly surpasses that of several other world leaders active on the platform. According to publicly available figures, former United States President Donald Trump currently holds the second position with around 43.2 million followers. Other leaders trail behind by a wide margin, including Prabowo Subianto, who has around 15 million followers, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva with about 14.4 million, Recep Tayyip Erdogan with approximately 11.6 million followers, and Javier Milei, who has around 6.4 million followers. Observers note that the combined follower count of several leading global politicians still falls short of Modi’s individual following, underlining the scale of his presence on digital platforms. Within India as well, Modi remains far ahead of other political leaders on Instagram. Yogi Adityanath ranks second among Indian politicians with roughly 16 million followers, while senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi follows with around 12 million. Experts say Modi’s popularity on Instagram reflects the growing importance of social media in modern political communication. Visual platforms such as Instagram allow leaders to communicate directly with citizens, especially younger audiences, without relying solely on traditional media channels. For the Prime Minister, social media has long been a key tool for public outreach, governance messaging and engagement with people across the country and around the world. Crossing the 100-million-follower mark marks another significant moment in the evolution of political communication in the digital age.
