PM Modi Pays Tribute to Indira Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid tribute to India’s first woman Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, on the occasion of her 108th birth anniversary. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Modi wrote, "Tributes to former PM Smt. Indira Gandhi Ji on the occasion of her birth anniversary."

Born on November 19, 1917, Indira Gandhi served as the country’s Prime Minister in two non-consecutive terms: from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her tragic assassination in 1984. A central figure in Indian politics, she was known for her bold leadership, especially during critical events such as the 1971 India-Pakistan war, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. Her decisive role in the war earned her the title of ‘Iron Lady of India.’

Under her leadership, India made significant strides in various sectors, including agriculture, with the Green Revolution making the country self-sufficient in food production. However, her tenure was not without controversy, most notably the declaration of a nationwide Emergency from 1975 to 1977, which curtailed civil liberties and led to widespread political unrest.

Indira Gandhi’s legacy continues to evoke strong opinions across the political spectrum. While her admirers credit her with fortifying India’s position on the global stage, critics point to her authoritarian measures during the Emergency and other policies that divided public opinion.

Prime Minister Modi’s tribute is part of a broader recognition of her significant impact on India’s history. Despite differences in political ideologies, she remains a central figure in India’s post-independence political narrative.
