New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Surat on 15th November to review the progress of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR), a flagship infrastructure project that aims to revolutionise travel between two of India's largest cities. The visit will take place at around 10 AM, with Modi inspecting the under-construction Bullet Train Station in Surat.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, covering 508 kilometres, will be one of the country's most ambitious transportation projects, connecting cities across Gujarat and Maharashtra. The high-speed rail system is designed to cut travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to just two hours, a significant reduction from the current 7-8 hours. The project spans approximately 352 kilometres in Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and 156 kilometres in Maharashtra. Upon completion, it will connect key cities such as Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and Mumbai. Built to international standards, much of the corridor will be elevated, with 465 kilometres (approximately 85% of the route) constructed on viaducts to reduce land disturbance and improve safety.
Notably, 326 kilometres of viaduct work has already been completed, and 17 out of the 25 river bridges have been constructed. The Surat-Bilimora section, covering 47 kilometres, is also in an advanced stage, with civil works and track-bed laying now fully completed. The design of Surat's Bullet Train Station draws inspiration from the city's diamond industry, reflecting both its elegance and functionality. The station will feature modern amenities, including spacious waiting lounges, retail outlets, and seamless connectivity with the Surat Metro and city buses, enhancing commuter experience.
This project is expected to boost economic activity, enhance regional development, and improve connectivity, making inter-city travel faster, more comfortable, and efficient.
