Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the historic Sri Krishna Math in Udupi on Friday, according to officials overseeing the preparations. The visit is expected to draw considerable attention in the coastal temple town, which is known for its long standing spiritual traditions and strong devotional following.
Officials confirmed on Thursday, that the Prime Minister will take part in the Laksha Geeta Pathana, a mass recitation in which more than one lakh devotees will chant verses from the Bhagavad Gita. Describing the scale of the gathering, an official said it would be “a rare collective recitation performed by a very large number of devotees”. The Sri Krishna Math, an important centre of worship in Karnataka, has a history linked to the teachings of the philosopher saint Madhvacharya. The temple is revered for its rituals and customs that have continued for centuries. During his visit, the Prime Minister is expected to offer prayers at the Sri Krishna temple, which stands at the heart of the Math complex and remains a major attraction for pilgrims from across the country.
He will also receive blessings from the presiding Paryaya Swamiji. A temple representative noted that the meeting between the Prime Minister and the Swamiji will follow traditional practice and added that “the Math regards the visit as an occasion of significance”. In anticipation of the large crowd expected for the mass recitation, authorities have increased security arrangements in and around the temple complex. Local administrators have coordinated with temple officials to ensure smooth movement and the orderly conduct of the programme.
Residents of Udupi have welcomed the announcement of the visit and believe it will bring wider attention to the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Math. The Prime Minister’s schedule is expected to conclude after he completes the prayers and receives blessings from the Paryaya Swamiji.
