Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday appealed to people across the country to read the Tirukkural, the timeless Tamil classic authored by philosopher-poet Thiruvalluvar, on the occasion of Thiruvalluvar Day. The day is observed every year alongside the Pongal festivities, celebrating Tamil culture, heritage and wisdom.
In a message shared on social media platform X, the Prime Minister paid tribute to Thiruvalluvar, describing him as a versatile thinker whose ideals continue to inspire generations. PM Modi said Thiruvalluvar believed in building a society rooted in harmony, compassion and moral values, principles that remain deeply relevant even in modern times.
“Today, on Thiruvalluvar Day, paying homage to the versatile Thiruvalluvar, whose works and ideals inspire innumerable people,” the Prime Minister wrote. He added that Thiruvalluvar personifies the finest aspects of Tamil culture and intellectual tradition.
Urging citizens to engage with the ancient text, PM Modi said the Tirukkural offers profound insights into various aspects of human life, including ethics, governance, love and personal conduct. He described the work as a reflection of Thiruvalluvar’s outstanding intellect and universal vision, which transcends time, language and geography.
The Tirukkural, consisting of 1,330 couplets, is widely regarded as one of the greatest works in Tamil literature and has been translated into numerous languages worldwide. Scholars and leaders across centuries have praised it for its concise yet powerful teachings on virtue (aram), wealth (porul) and love (inbam).
Thiruvalluvar Day holds special significance in Tamil Nadu and among Tamil communities globally, marking a moment to reflect on ethical living and social responsibility. The Prime Minister’s message aligns with his broader emphasis on celebrating India’s diverse cultural heritage and encouraging citizens to draw inspiration from classical texts.
The appeal comes amid ongoing Pongal celebrations, a harvest festival that symbolizes gratitude, prosperity and unity, reinforcing the timeless values championed by Thiruvalluvar and his enduring literary legacy.
