Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha on the occasion of her first death anniversary on Wednesday, 5 November 2025. Fondly known as the Bihar Kokila, Sinha was celebrated for her contribution to promoting the rich art and culture of Bihar through her soulful folk songs.
In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister wrote in Hindi, “बिहार कोकिला शारदा सिन्हा जी की पहली पुण्यतिथि पर उन्हें भावभीनी श्रद्धांजलि। उन्होंने बिहार की कला-संस्कृति को लोकगीतों के माध्यम से एक नई पहचान दी, जिसके लिए उन्हें सदैव याद किया जाएगा। महापर्व छठ से जुड़े उनके सुमधुर गीत हमेशा जनमानस में रचे-बसे रहेंगे।”
In his tribute, Shri Modi said, “She gave a new identity to Bihar’s art and culture through folk songs, for which she will always be remembered. Her melodious songs associated with the great festival Chhath will forever remain etched in the hearts of the people.”
Sharda Sinha, who passed away in 2024, was a Padma Bhushan awardee and one of the most admired voices in Indian folk music. Known for her traditional Bhojpuri, Maithili and Magahi songs, she gained nationwide recognition for her Chhath festival hymns and her contribution to regional cinema and devotional music.
Her works have inspired generations of singers and musicians, preserving Bihar’s cultural heritage through music that transcended boundaries. Referred to affectionately as the Voice of Bihar, Sinha’s songs continue to be a vital part of festive celebrations, particularly during Chhath Puja.
The Prime Minister’s message echoed the sentiments of millions of admirers who remember Sharda Sinha not only for her music but also for her role in promoting cultural pride and unity through art. Her legacy, deeply rooted in folk tradition and spirituality, continues to resonate across India and beyond.
