NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the National Conference on “Strengthening Legal Aid Delivery Mechanisms” at the Supreme Court of India on 8 November at 5 pm.
According to an official statement, the two-day conference is being organised by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) to review and enhance the country’s legal aid and justice delivery systems. During the event, the Prime Minister will launch the Community Mediation Training Module, developed by NALSA to promote alternative dispute resolution at the grassroots level. The conference will feature deliberations on several key components of the legal services network, including the Legal Aid Defence Counsel System, panel lawyers, para-legal volunteers, and permanent Lok Adalats. Discussions will also focus on improving financial management within legal services institutions to ensure efficient delivery of justice to underprivileged and marginalised citizens.
Senior members of the judiciary, including judges of the Supreme Court and various High Courts, as well as representatives from state legal services authorities, are expected to participate in the conference. The event aims to strengthen coordination between the judiciary, legal aid providers and community-based mechanisms to make access to justice more inclusive and effective. Officials said the Prime Minister’s address will underline the government’s commitment to ensuring that “justice reaches the last person in line” through institutional support, technology and public participation.
The conference will conclude on 9 November, coinciding with Legal Services Day, which marks the enactment of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
