Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday carried out coordinated searches at multiple locations in Sopore linked to members of the banned organisation Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. The operation was conducted in the presence of an executive magistrate, following valid search warrants issued by the Sopore UAPA special court.
Officials said the raids targeted the residences and premises of Zaffar Islam, also known as Yadullah Peer, Lateef Ahmad Kaloo, and Mohammad Ashraf Malik. The exercise formed part of an ongoing investigation under Sections 10 and 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), aimed at gathering evidence related to the organisation’s activities in the region.
During the searches, authorities examined electronic devices, documents, and other relevant materials. Further legal procedures, including the collection of evidence and questioning of suspects, are expected to follow in line with the UAPA guidelines.
A police officer involved in the operation said the raids were carried out meticulously to ensure compliance with legal provisions and maintain transparency. “All actions were taken after securing proper judicial approval to avoid any procedural lapses,” the officer added.
The move comes amid heightened vigilance in the valley against groups banned under anti-terror laws. Security forces have been stepping up operations to curb the influence of such organisations, particularly in sensitive areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
While authorities did not report any arrests during Thursday’s searches, officials confirmed that evidence collected will play a key role in ongoing investigations. The police have appealed to residents in Sopore to cooperate with the authorities and report any suspicious activity to help maintain peace and security.
The operation reflects the state administration’s continued focus on law enforcement and counter-terrorism efforts in the region, aiming to dismantle networks of banned organisations operating under the guise of political or social groups.
