NEW DELHI: The Department of Posts, under the Ministry of Communications, has reported remarkable progress midway through the Special Campaign 5.0, an initiative designed to promote cleanliness, reduce administrative pendency, and enhance record management across postal establishments nationwide. The campaign, which forms part of the government’s broader Swachhata and good governance drive, has seen active participation from all levels, postal circles, regional offices, divisions, sorting centres, and post offices ranging from Head Post Offices to Branch Post Offices.
So far, the department has covered around 47,358 of the targeted 1,25,000 postal sites under Swachhata activities. These cleanliness drives have resulted in better-organised, cleaner, and more citizen-friendly work environments across the country. Another highlight of the initiative is the organisation of 4,952 Dak Chaupals, community-based outreach programmes aimed at taking postal and government services to the doorsteps of citizens. These events have helped foster last-mile connectivity and strengthened citizen engagement with postal services.
In terms of administrative efficiency, the department has reviewed 32,249 physical files, out of which 7,611 have been weeded out or closed, streamlining operations and improving productivity. The Ministry also reported the successful resolution of over 57,961 pending public grievances and appeals, a clear indicator of the Department’s commitment to responsive and accountable governance. Through systematic record management, digitisation, and removal of obsolete materials, approximately 13,049 square feet of office space have been freed. Additionally, the sale of unserviceable items and scrap materials has generated revenue of ₹32.48 lakh.
A major visual aspect of the campaign has been the beautification of post office premises through vibrant wall art depicting themes such as cleanliness, postal heritage, and public awareness. These creative expressions have not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of workspaces but have also served as tools to inspire citizens and postal employees to uphold the spirit of Swachhata.
Many postal circles have also undertaken “Best out of Waste” activities, creating decorative and useful items from discarded materials to encourage recycling and environmental consciousness. This innovative approach reflects the Department’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency.
Looking ahead, the Department of Posts stated that the second phase of Special Campaign 5.0 will focus on consolidating the achievements of the first half, ensuring that the progress made is sustainable and long-term. The upcoming phase aims to further institutionalise cleanliness practices, reinforce accountability, and embed a culture of efficiency and service excellence throughout the postal network.
