Nainital: The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, attended a ceremony in Nainital on Monday to commemorate 125 years since the establishment of the Raj Bhavan in Uttarakhand.
Addressing the gathering, the President said that just as Rashtrapati Bhavan stands as a symbol of the Republic in independent India, Raj Bhavans represent the democratic spirit within the states. She noted that, following the formation of Uttarakhand, the Nainital Raj Bhavan had become an integral part of the state’s journey of progress.
Highlighting the constitutional role of Governors, the President remarked that in a parliamentary system, the Governor serves as the constitutional head of the state’s governance. She observed that the powers and responsibilities of this office were carefully defined by the framers of the Constitution to ensure a balanced and accountable system of administration.
“The people of the state view the Raj Bhavans as revered places,” the President said, adding that members of the Governor’s team are expected to uphold the values of simplicity, humility, morality, and sensitivity in public service.
Reflecting on Uttarakhand’s development, Smt Murmu expressed satisfaction over the state’s achievements since its inception, describing its journey as one of “continuous progress and prosperity.” She said she was confident that the Governor and his team would continue to inspire the people of Uttarakhand and strengthen the state’s development efforts.
The event marked a significant moment in the history of the Raj Bhavan, Nainital, which has served as both a heritage landmark and a centre of governance for over a century. The commemoration highlighted the enduring legacy of the institution and its continuing role in upholding democratic traditions in the state.
