Dehradun:  President Droupadi Murmu on Monday addressed the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the state’s formation, calling legislative assemblies a “key pillar of our parliamentary system” and urging legislators to remain dedicated to public service and welfare.
Speaking at the Assembly in Dehradun, the President said that constant accountability to the public is both the strength and challenge of India’s parliamentary democracy. Quoting Dr B R Ambedkar, she said the framers of the Constitution attached great importance to continuous accountability by choosing the parliamentary form of government.
Highlighting the crucial role of legislators, President Murmu remarked, “It is a great privilege to have the opportunity to connect with people of the constituency and serve them at grassroots level.” She added that when representatives stay actively engaged in solving people’s problems, the bond of trust between them and the public remains unbreakable.
The President urged the members of the Uttarakhand Assembly to pursue development and welfare with complete dedication, stressing that such work transcends party politics. She advised them to work with sensitivity towards the underprivileged and to focus on creating opportunities for the younger generation.
Referring to Article 44 of the Constitution, President Murmu appreciated the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly for implementing the Uniform Civil Code Bill, in accordance with the constitutional directive. She also praised the House for passing over 550 bills, including the Lokayukta Bill, Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms Bill, and the Anti-Copying Bill, all inspired by transparency, morality and social justice.
Commending the state’s achievements, she said Uttarakhand is blessed with natural beauty and resources and has made “commendable progress” over the past 25 years in environment, energy, tourism, healthcare, education, and infrastructure. The President expressed confidence that with the spirit of Nation First, the Assembly would continue to take the state forward on the path of sustainable and inclusive development.
