New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that World Mental Health Day serves as a powerful reminder that mental health is an integral part of overall well-being, calling for collective efforts to make conversations around mental health more open and compassionate.

In a message shared on social media platform X, the Prime Minister reflected on the significance of the day in the context of modern life.

“World Mental Health Day serves as a powerful reminder that mental health is a fundamental part of our overall well-being. In a fast-paced world, this day underscores the importance of reflecting and extending compassion to others. Let us also work collectively to create environments where conversations around mental health become more mainstream,” he wrote.

The Prime Minister also expressed his appreciation for individuals and organisations dedicated to promoting mental wellness and supporting those in need.

“My compliments to all those working in this field and helping others heal and find happiness,” he added.

World Mental Health Day, observed annually on 10 October, aims to raise global awareness about mental health issues and mobilise support for efforts that promote psychological well-being. This year’s theme focuses on making mental health and well-being a universal human right, highlighting the need for accessible mental health care and community support.

The Prime Minister’s remarks echo India’s growing emphasis on mental health advocacy, reflected in government initiatives such as the National Tele Mental Health Programme and awareness campaigns encouraging early intervention, empathy, and destigmatisation.

Health experts have welcomed the Prime Minister’s message, noting that leadership-level engagement plays a key role in normalising public discussions on emotional well-being, particularly in a society where mental health concerns are often under-recognised or misunderstood.

As the country marks World Mental Health Day, the Prime Minister’s call for compassion and collective responsibility reinforces the importance of viewing mental wellness not merely as a personal issue but as a shared societal goal.
