Born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam rose from humble beginnings to become one of India’s foremost scientists. Popularly known as the ‘Missile Man of India’, he played a pivotal role in advancing India’s space and defence programmes, including the development of indigenous satellite launch vehicles and strategic missile systems.
Dr. Kalam served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007, earning admiration for his integrity, accessibility, and deep commitment to youth empowerment and education. His vision document, India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium, continues to influence India’s developmental thinking and aspirations.
Each year, Dr. Kalam’s birth anniversary is observed as World Students’ Day, recognising his lifelong dedication to inspiring young learners. Educational institutions and scientific organisations across the country marked the day with lectures, seminars, and creative competitions centred on innovation and nation-building.
The Prime Minister’s tribute reflects a broader national sentiment of respect and gratitude for Dr. Kalam’s enduring contributions to science, education, and leadership. As Shri Modi stated, the greatest tribute to Dr. Kalam lies in collectively working toward building the India he dreamt of a nation that is strong, self-reliant, and compassionate.
