The recent removal of Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain has sparked intense debate within the cricketing fraternity, with allegations emerging that head coach Gautam Gambhir may have influenced the decision taken by chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Rohit, one of India’s most successful modern-day leaders, was reportedly removed from the role rather than stepping down voluntarily. The decision came despite his recent success, including leading India to the ICC Champions Trophy title. Officially, the Board of Control for Cricket in India selection committee cited long-term planning and preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup as the reason behind the leadership change.
However, former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary openly questioned the process and fairness of the move. Speaking to the media, Tiwary suggested that while Agarkar is known for taking strong, independent decisions, such a major call could not have been made without inputs from the team management. He hinted that Gambhir’s influence may have played a behind-the-scenes role in shaping the outcome.
Tiwary also expressed disappointment over what he described as inconsistency in team selection and leadership decisions. According to him, removing a captain who has delivered two major ICC trophies sends a confusing message and undermines the value of proven leadership. He added that doubting Rohit’s ability to continue till the 2027 World Cup was unjustified, especially given his fitness, form, and hunger to perform at the highest level.
The selection committee has appointed Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, signalling a shift towards a younger leadership group. While some view the move as a forward-looking step, others believe Rohit deserved a more respectful transition.
As discussions continue, the episode has once again highlighted the complex dynamics between selectors, coaches, and players in Indian cricket, leaving fans divided over whether the decision was visionary or unnecessarily harsh.
