The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday named Indranil Bhattacharyya as its new Executive Director (ED), from March 19. Bhattacharyya, in this role, will head the Department of Economic and Policy Research.
Before this promotion, Bhattacharyya was serving as Adviser in the Monetary Policy Department of RBI. Having spent almost 30 years with RBI, he has a rich skill set covering monetary policy, fiscal policy, banking, and external economic relations. He has also contributed importantly to the RBI's International Department and the Department of Economic and Policy Research.
Professional Background
Aside from his work at the RBI, Bhattacharyya boasts a rich five-year background as an economic expert at the technical office of the Governor at the Qatar Central Bank in Doha, Qatar, between 2009 and 2014. This furthered his international knowledge of economic policy and central banking.
Bhattacharyya holds a postgraduate degree in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi. His main areas of research are monetary theory and policy, financial markets, market microstructure, and fiscal policy. The RBI has highlighted that his vast experience in these areas will be a major asset in his new leadership role.
