Sanju Samson grabbed his long-awaited opportunity with both hands as India made a blazing start against South Africa in the decisive fifth T20I at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday. Drafted in as an opener following Shubman Gill’s injury setback, Samson lit up the powerplay with fearless strokeplay, immediately justifying the team management’s call.
South Africa captain Aiden Markram won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping early movement would trouble India’s reshuffled top order. Instead, Samson and Abhishek Sharma turned the tables, attacking from the outset. Abhishek set the tone by hammering Marco Jansen for three consecutive boundaries, while Samson joined the assault with elegant drives and a towering six to keep the scoreboard racing. India surged past 40 without loss inside the first four overs, putting early pressure on the visitors.
Gill’s absence, due to an impact injury on his right foot sustained during practice earlier in the week, had raised concerns about India’s balance. However, Samson’s intent ensured there was no dip in momentum. The right-hander, often criticised for inconsistency at the international level, looked assured and decisive, making full use of the powerplay fielding restrictions.
South Africa had their own worries early on as wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock appeared to hurt his fingers while taking a catch attempt in the opening over. Though visibly in discomfort, he continued behind the stumps, offering some relief to the Proteas.
India entered the final match with a 2–1 lead in the five-match series after the fourth T20I in Lucknow was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to heavy fog. With the series on the line, the hosts showed urgency and clarity in approach, while South Africa searched for early breakthroughs to stay alive in the contest.
As the match unfolded, all eyes remained on Samson’s knock, which not only shaped India’s innings but also added intrigue ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup squad announcement.
