NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday indicated it might transfer the case involving the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to either Delhi or the Calcutta High Court.
The case, which has drawn widespread attention, was initially taken up by the Supreme Court on a suo motu basis in 2024, after the tragic incident came to light. The bench, comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma, remarked that the case cannot be heard in isolation, given that several related matters are still pending in the Calcutta High Court.
The bench said it would consider the request for a transfer, acknowledging the complexities of the case and the need for a coordinated approach in its proceedings.
The brutal crime has shocked the nation, and calls for a fair and speedy trial have been growing louder, with many demanding that the case be handled in a way that ensures justice for the victim and her family. The Supreme Court’s consideration of the transfer reflects the gravity with which it views the matter, as well as the need for a comprehensive and transparent legal process.
