The Supreme Court will hear on Monday a plea seeking a structured mechanism to ensure that postgraduate seats in pre clinical and para clinical branches do not remain vacant in medical colleges across the country.
The petition has asked the National Medical Commission to frame a process that prevents seats from going unfilled during admissions. It has also sought disclosure of data detailing how many seats in these branches have remained vacant over the past five years.
The matter is listed before a bench of Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and N V Anjaria. The plea argues that vacancies in these specialised branches affect healthcare education and lead to resource wastage in institutions.
The court is expected to examine whether the commission should be directed to put in place a uniform mechanism to address the recurring issue of unfilled seats.
