THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate a second sexual assault allegation against expelled Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil. The police confirmed the formation of the team on Friday, emphasising the seriousness of the charges.
The SIT will be headed by G Poonguzhali, Assistant Inspector General at the Police Headquarters. The team will also consist of a senior officer with the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), alongside sub-inspectors, as stated by the authorities. Mamkootathil, who was expelled from the Congress party earlier this year following similar accusations, now faces an additional case of sexual assault. The new complaint adds to the growing controversy surrounding the former MLA, who has been at the centre of public scrutiny since the first case emerged.
Authorities have assured a thorough investigation and are prioritising the case due to its sensitive nature. “The SIT will work tirelessly to ensure that all aspects of the case are fully examined,” an official said. This case is the latest in a string of incidents involving high-profile figures in Kerala, prompting calls for stronger measures to address allegations of sexual misconduct. The SIT’s formation is seen as a significant step in ensuring accountability and justice for the victims.
The investigation is expected to unfold over the coming weeks, with further updates anticipated as new developments arise.
