Ahead of his visit to the Somnath Temple on January 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that repeated historical attacks on the ancient shrine only strengthened India’s cultural unity and unbroken spiritual resolve. He shared these reflections while announcing the start of the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, a four-day celebration being observed from January 8 to January 11.
In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister recalled that the Somnath Temple faced its first recorded attack in January 1026, followed by several assaults over centuries. However, he emphasised that these events failed to weaken the faith of the people. Instead, they reinforced India’s civilisational strength, leading to the temple’s repeated reconstruction and revival.
Describing the Swabhiman Parv as a “festival of remembrance,” PM Modi said it honours countless Indians who never compromised on their principles and values, even during the most challenging times. He noted that their unwavering commitment to India’s civilisation and cultural consciousness continues to inspire efforts toward national unity.
The Prime Minister also shared glimpses from a programme held at Somnath on October 31, 2001, which marked the 50th anniversary of the temple’s reconstruction and its inauguration in 1951. He recalled that the historic 1951 ceremony took place in the presence of then President Dr. Rajendra Prasad and highlighted the key role played by leaders such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and K.M. Munshi in rebuilding the temple. The 2001 event, he added, was attended by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Home Minister L.K. Advani.
PM Modi pointed out that 2026 also marks the 75th anniversary of the grand 1951 inauguration. He said the thousand years of “unbroken faith” associated with Somnath continue to inspire Indians to remain committed to unity, cultural pride and shared national values.
During the Swabhiman Parv, a series of programmes highlighting India’s spiritual heritage, cultural pride and social values will be organised at Somnath.
