The Special Olympics Bharat National Football Championship 2025 has begun at the SAII Complex in Salt Lake. Athletes from 22 states across the country have gathered for this week-long special competition starting today. The primary aim of this initiative is to bring athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities into the mainstream of society.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Sushil Poddar, President of the Confederation of West Bengal Trade Associations, Debashis Dutta, President of Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, along with several senior officials from various institutions.

Speaking at the event, Special Olympics Bharat–West Bengal President CA Pawan Kumar Patodia said, “For many years, Special Olympics Bharat has stood beside these special children. Our main goal is to place them in the mainstream, not at the margins of society.” He mentioned that recognition from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports as a national sports federation has enabled these special athletes to represent India on international platforms.

Patodia praised the courage and spirit of India’s athletes, saying, “Our athletes work hard and step onto the field with great determination. They seek not sympathy or pity, but respect.”

India’s success on the global stage is noteworthy. The country has participated in 16 Special Olympics World Games so far. Indian athletes won 200 medals at the 2023 Berlin World Summer Games, and secured 33 medals at the 2025 Turin Winter Games. India has also been champions twice in a row at the Gothia Cup (Sweden).

Patodia appealed to corporate houses and government bodies to increase their support. He believes that with stronger backing, these athletes will get more opportunities and further bring glory to the nation.

This championship will continue until November 20, featuring competitions across multiple categories in both league and knockout formats.
