The approval of a major infrastructure project at Srinagar International Airport has been welcomed by the Jammu and Kashmir government, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for clearing the development of a new civil enclave. The project, estimated to cost around ₹1,677 crore, received approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs earlier on Tuesday.
According to an official statement, the project aims to significantly strengthen aviation infrastructure and improve connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. The development of the civil enclave at Srinagar International Airport is expected to modernise passenger facilities and support the growing demand for air travel in the region.
Welcoming the decision, Abdullah said the expansion will play a crucial role in boosting the region’s economy. He emphasised that better air connectivity would make it easier for tourists, investors and businesses to access Jammu and Kashmir, ultimately helping several sectors grow.
Tourism is considered one of the key drivers of the region’s economy, and improved aviation infrastructure is expected to encourage more domestic and international visitors to explore the valley. Abdullah noted that increased tourist inflow would create new opportunities for hotels, transport services, handicrafts, and other local industries that depend on tourism.
He further stated that the expansion of the airport would help strengthen Jammu and Kashmir’s connectivity with the rest of India, making travel smoother and more efficient for passengers. According to him, the improved infrastructure would also facilitate trade and business activities, helping local entrepreneurs reach wider markets.
“The expansion of the Srinagar airport is a transformative step for Jammu and Kashmir. Enhanced aviation infrastructure will not only strengthen connectivity with the rest of the country but also accelerate economic growth and tourism in the region,” Abdullah said in his statement.
Officials believe the project will also generate employment opportunities during both the construction phase and the operational phase once the new facilities are developed. Jobs are expected to be created in construction, airport services, tourism-related businesses and logistics.
The government views the project as a strategic move to unlock the economic potential of the region. With better connectivity and modern infrastructure, Jammu and Kashmir is expected to attract more investment and strengthen its position as a prominent tourism destination in India.
Authorities said the development of the civil enclave will be an important step toward transforming the region into a major hub for tourism, trade and economic growth in the coming years.
