When will Indian cricket’s two stars, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, return to the field? The answer remains unknown. Both now play only in the ODI format and India’s next ODI series begins on November 30 at home against South Africa. Until then, there’s little chance of seeing the duo in action, as reports suggest neither seems particularly keen to play for their state teams in domestic cricket.
However, legendary Australian cricketer Steve Waugh believes Rohit and Virat should play regular domestic matches. According to the World Cup-winning captain, it would not only help them stay prepared for international cricket but also inspire and improve the next generation by giving younger players a chance to share the field with such icons.
“It’s important for Indian stars to play more Ranji matches not just to stay ready themselves, but to raise the standard of domestic cricket. Youngsters will develop by playing alongside them,” said Waugh. “It should be the responsibility of top players to represent their state sides whenever there’s no international duty. Playing one or two matches shouldn’t be too demanding.”
Since both Rohit and Virat now play just one format, Waugh believes it shouldn’t be an issue for them. “Their situation is different, and they’ll need to adjust mentally,” he explained. “But they’re among the all-time greats they know how to adapt and make necessary changes in their game.”
Referring to their recent performances against Australia Rohit’s century and half-century, and Virat’s fine fifty in Sydney after two ducks Waugh added, “You saw how they played in Sydney. They controlled the pace of the game and helped India win. So the question is, are they still passionate about training and preparation? Because playing matches is the easy part. If they still have the hunger to prepare, they’ll be fine. But if they wake up one morning and don’t feel like training anymore, it’s time to walk away.”
Steve Waugh also recalled his fond memories of Kolkata. “I have many memories here winning the World Cup in 1987, and that unforgettable 2001 Test even though we lost. It was a great match for cricket. Later, I became involved with Udayan and made many friends in this city,” he said.
