The Supreme Court will today review a group of petitions that question the legality of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
A panel of judges, including Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Sanjay Kumar, and Justice KV Viswanathan, will take up the matter at 2 PM. More than seventy petitions have been scheduled for hearing.
Several prominent leaders and organisations are among the petitioners, including AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, Congress MP Md Jawed, RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha, TMC MP Mahua Moitra, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, DMK, Indian Union Muslim League, YSRC Party, Samastha Kerala Jamiatul Ulema, Delhi MLA Amanatullah Khan, SP MP Zia Ur Rehman, the Imam of Jama Masjid Bengaluru, the Communist Party of India, and TVK President & actor Vijay, along with the Association for Protection of Civil Rights.
On the other hand, several state governments — including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, Assam, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh — have submitted applications supporting the law. The Central Government has also filed a caveat to ensure it is heard before any orders are passed.
