India delivered a commanding performance to defeat Pakistan by 61 runs in their Group A clash at the T20 World Cup 2026, sending a strong message to the rest of the tournament. Led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, India dominated both with the bat and ball at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Batting first, India posted a competitive total of 175/6, thanks largely to a brilliant 77 from Ishan Kishan. The left-hander took on Pakistan’s spin-heavy attack with confidence, attacking in the powerplay and ensuring India stayed ahead of the run rate. Despite a brief slowdown in the middle overs, useful contributions from Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh helped India finish strongly.
In reply, Pakistan struggled from the outset. Chasing 176, their batting line-up crumbled under disciplined Indian bowling and were bowled out for just 114 in 18 overs. Only Usman Khan showed some resistance, but lacked support from the other end. India’s bowling attack shared the spoils, with Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel picking up two wickets each.
After the match, a smiling Suryakumar dedicated the win to the nation, saying, “This is for India.” He praised Kishan’s fearless approach and credited the bowlers for executing plans perfectly. “As soon as we reached 175, we felt it was 15-20 runs above par. The bowlers did the rest,” he added.
With this emphatic victory, India sealed their place in the Super 8s and reaffirmed their status as one of the tournament favourites. They will next face the Netherlands as they look to carry forward their winning momentum.
