PALGHAR: A woman teacher has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of a Class 6 student who was allegedly forced to do 100 sit-ups as punishment for arriving late to school. The incident took place at a private school in Sativali, located in the Vasai area of Maharashtra’s Palghar district.

The teacher, who has been removed from her position, was arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Indian Penal Code. According to police officials from Waliv police station, the arrest was made after a formal investigation into the incident. The incident occurred on November 8, when the young girl reportedly arrived late to school. Her mother has accused the teacher of imposing a harsh and "inhuman" punishment, forcing the child to perform 100 sit-ups with her school bag on her back.

The girl reportedly collapsed after the exercise and later died, with her family alleging that the punishment led to her untimely death. Following the death, the school administration removed the teacher from her role, and an investigation was launched into the circumstances surrounding the punishment. Authorities are now looking into whether the punishment was excessive and whether it directly contributed to the child’s death.

The case has sparked outrage among local communities, with many demanding justice for the young girl and stronger regulations to prevent such incidents in the future. The police have said they will continue to investigate the case thoroughly to ensure accountability for the actions that led to the tragedy.
