A shocking incident of violence rocked the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus on Wednesday night when a school teacher was shot dead while out on an evening walk with colleagues. The incident has triggered concern over safety within educational institutions and raised fresh questions about law and order in Uttar Pradesh.
The victim, Danish Rao, was a computer science teacher at ABK High School on the AMU campus and had been associated with the institution for over 11 years. According to police officials, Rao was walking with two fellow teachers around 8:50 pm near the university’s central library when two unidentified men arrived on a scooter and confronted them at gunpoint.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the assailants threatened the group before opening fire. Rao was hit at least three times, including two bullet wounds to the head. He collapsed on the spot and was immediately rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Jadon confirmed that both attackers fired at the teacher before fleeing the scene. “Multiple police teams have been formed to investigate the case. CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being examined to identify the accused,” he said.
AMU Proctor Mohd Wasim Ali also confirmed the incident, stating that the university administration was informed shortly after 9 pm. Security within the campus has since been tightened, and cooperation with the police investigation is ongoing.
The killing has sparked widespread shock, especially as it occurred just hours after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spoke in the state Assembly about improved law and order and a safer environment for citizens and investors.
As the investigation continues, faculty members and students have expressed fear and grief, demanding swift justice and stronger security measures on campus. Further details regarding the motive behind the murder are awaited.
