Team India has finally addressed the debate surrounding Ayush Badoni’s inclusion in the ODI squad for the ongoing New Zealand series, calling the decision a well-thought-out and practical move rather than a gamble. Badoni was drafted into the team after Washington Sundar was ruled out due to injury, a change that sparked mixed reactions among fans and former players alike.
Many cricket followers questioned why names like Riyan Parag or Rinku Singh were overlooked. However, Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak clarified that Badoni fits the team’s immediate needs as a like-for-like replacement. Speaking ahead of the second ODI, Kotak explained that modern ODI cricket demands depth, especially in bowling options.
“When an all-rounder like Washington is unavailable, you cannot go in with just five bowlers,” Kotak said. “If an injury happens during the match, the team must have someone who can bowl four or five overs. Badoni gives us that balance.”
Kotak highlighted Badoni’s consistent performances in India A matches and his growing maturity in white-ball cricket. The Delhi youngster has impressed with both bat and ball, scoring crucial runs and providing useful right-arm off-spin when needed. His performances in the IPL for Lucknow Super Giants were also cited as a major factor behind the selectors’ confidence.
Statistically, Badoni’s case is strong. In List A cricket, he has scored 693 runs at an average of over 36, along with 18 wickets at a tidy economy rate. His outings against South Africa A and Australia A further showcased his all-round potential on competitive stages.
While the debate over selection may continue, Team India has made it clear that Badoni’s inclusion is about balance, flexibility, and preparedness. Now, with an international opportunity in hand, the spotlight shifts to the young all-rounder to justify the faith shown in him on the big stage.
