Telangana’s proposal to name a key Hyderabad road after US President Donald Trump has triggered both global curiosity and sharp political reactions at home. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has suggested that the stretch running alongside the US Consulate General be officially designated “Donald Trump Avenue”, a move positioned as a bold branding exercise ahead of the upcoming Telangana Rising Global Summit. Officials believe this could be the first time a sitting US President is honoured with a road name outside the United States.
The initiative is part of a broader naming strategy aimed at placing Hyderabad prominently on the world map. Other global names under consideration include Google Street, Microsoft Road, and Wipro Junction, acknowledging the major corporate presence that has shaped the city into a thriving technology hub. The government has also approved naming a 100-metre greenfield radial road, connecting the Nehru Outer Ring Road to the proposed Future City, after industrial icon Ratan Tata. The Raviryala interchange has already been marked as the Tata Interchange.
According to the Chief Minister, these names serve a dual purpose paying tribute to influential global and national figures while giving Hyderabad an aspirational identity aligned with its growing international stature. He argued that such symbolic gestures can attract investment, attention, and pride among citizens.
The move, however, has drawn fire from the BJP. Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar criticised the Congress government, claiming that the state was indulging in headline-hunting rather than addressing real issues. Reiterating the BJP’s long-standing demand, he said Hyderabad should be renamed “Bhagyanagar” before any new road names are considered. He also accused Revanth Reddy of renaming places after “whoever trends”, calling it a superficial exercise.
As Telangana prepares for its high-profile global summit, the debate over the city’s identity traditional, modern, or globally branded has once again taken centre stage.
