Two terrorists were killed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday evening after Indian Army troops spotted suspicious movement near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Machhal sector. Acting swiftly on specific intelligence inputs shared by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies, the Army launched a joint operation to intercept the infiltrators.
According to officials, troops noticed suspicious movement in the area and opened fire when the militants attempted to escape. The encounter led to the elimination of two terrorists, and a large cache of weapons and other war-like stores was recovered from the site. Security forces immediately cordoned off the area, and extensive search operations are continuing to ensure no further infiltration attempts take place.
This encounter comes amid heightened alert along the LoC, as security agencies have been warning about possible infiltration bids before the onset of winter. The steep terrain and heavy snowfall during the colder months often make monitoring movements across the border challenging, which militants have tried to exploit in the past.
In response to the recent incidents, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed security forces to maintain a high level of vigilance along both the Line of Control and the International Border. Chairing a high-level security review meeting in New Delhi, Shah emphasized the need for coordinated surveillance to prevent any breach during the winter season. The meeting was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the Chief of Army Staff, senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Intelligence Bureau, and the Central Armed Police Forces.
Officials present at the meeting reviewed the current security situation, infiltration patterns, and preparedness of forces deployed in border areas. The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring peace and stability in the Union Territory and preventing cross-border terrorism.
Kupwara, located close to the LoC, remains one of the most sensitive sectors in North Kashmir, frequently witnessing attempts by militants to infiltrate into Indian territory. With the latest operation, security forces have once again demonstrated their readiness and coordination in countering threats along the border.
Search operations across the district continue as the Army and police maintain a tight vigil to prevent any resurgence of militant activity in the region.
