UN Slams Rising Israeli Settler Attacks, Warns of Annexation Push in West Bank

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has raised alarm over escalating Israeli settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, warning that the assaults are contributing to forced displacement and advancing annexation efforts.

According to the OHCHR statement issued on October 27, Israeli settlers, often joined by security forces, have carried out multiple attacks on Palestinian farmers and Bedouin communities, particularly during the ongoing olive harvest season. One verified video showed a 58-year-old olive farmer in Bethlehem being severely assaulted by settlers alongside security forces. Despite repeated incidents, the UN noted that perpetrators enjoy impunity, with few investigations leading to accountability.

In another major attack on October 25, masked settlers reportedly assaulted Palestinians in Mikhmas and later set fire to six homes in Khallet As Sidra, a Bedouin community northeast of East Jerusalem. Several people, including Palestinian men and Israeli solidarity activists, were injured. The violence has forced many families, especially women and children, to flee for safety, leaving behind homes and livelihoods.

The UN report highlighted that more than 3,200 Palestinians from Bedouin and herding communities have been displaced since October 2023 due to settler attacks and movement restrictions. Data from the Israeli NGO Peace Now shows a surge in new settler outposts 84 established in the past year compared to 49 the year before, far exceeding the average of eight annually over the previous decade.

With 757 settler attacks recorded in the first half of 2025, the UN warned that these actions are part of a broader strategy to consolidate Israeli control in violation of international law, further shrinking the space for Palestinians in the occupied territories.
