The Unnao rape survivor and her mother met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at the residence of Sonia Gandhi on 10, Janpath Road this evening, hours after the mother was allegedly manhandled by Central paramilitary personnel. The meeting came a day after Rahul Gandhi returned from Germany.
Earlier in the day, the paramilitary personnel stopped the survivor and her mother from addressing the media. In a shocking incident, the elderly mother was reportedly forced to jump off a moving bus, creating widespread outrage and condemnation.
The survivor and her mother have been protesting against the Delhi High Court’s recent decision granting relief to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who was convicted in the high-profile rape case. Sengar has challenged his conviction and sentence in the court and is currently out of jail until the legal process concludes.
Rahul Gandhi, known for taking a vocal stance on women’s safety and justice, met the duo to hear their grievances and extend support. Following the meeting, Congress sources confirmed that the party is closely monitoring the developments and is committed to raising the issue at the national level.
The incident has sparked renewed debate on law enforcement conduct during protests and the treatment of victims seeking justice. Political leaders and activists across the country have expressed concern over the reported treatment of the survivor’s mother, describing it as “unacceptable” and a reflection of systemic failures in protecting vulnerable citizens.
This development adds to the ongoing scrutiny of the legal and political handling of sexual assault cases in India, highlighting the challenges faced by survivors and their families in seeking timely justice.
