WhatsApp, the world’s most popular messaging app, could soon introduce a paid premium plan for regular users, while keeping its core service free. According to recent reports, the Meta-owned platform is testing a subscription tier that unlocks extra features focused on customisation, convenience, and better chat management.
The premium version is expected to offer users more control over how WhatsApp looks and feels. Early details suggest access to exclusive sticker packs, new app themes, custom icons, and dedicated alert tones for chats. These additions are aimed at users who enjoy personalising their apps beyond the default options available on the free version.
One of the most notable changes could be in chat organisation. Currently, WhatsApp allows users to pin up to three chats at the top of their inbox. The upcoming premium plan may increase this limit, making it easier for users to keep more important conversations readily accessible. This feature is reportedly being tested in beta builds and is available only to a limited set of users through a waitlist.
Importantly, WhatsApp is not planning to take away any existing features from free users. Messaging, voice and video calls, media sharing, and privacy settings are expected to remain unchanged for everyone. The premium tier would be entirely optional, offering added perks for those willing to pay, without disrupting the experience for the broader user base.
WhatsApp has already experimented with paid services through WhatsApp Business, where subscribers get benefits such as higher device limits and advanced tools for managing customer conversations. Extending a similar model to regular users could help the company explore new revenue streams while keeping the platform accessible to millions.
As of now, there is no official word from WhatsApp on pricing or a launch timeline. However, ongoing testing suggests the company is seriously considering a premium option as it looks to balance growth with sustainable monetisation.
