The chess world is mourning the sudden and untimely death of American Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky at just 29 years of age. His unexpected passing has left players, coaches, and fans around the globe stunned and expressing deep sorrow.

The news of Naroditsky’s death was first announced by the Charlotte Chess Center, which released a statement saying, “Daniel was a shining star in our community, inspiring thousands of young players with his dedication and teaching.” However, the cause of his death has not been disclosed.

Among those shocked was Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand, who wrote on social media 

 “Truly shocked at the passing of GM Daniel Naroditsky. An excellent player, an exceptional teacher, and a genuinely kind person. A life gone too soon. My deepest condolences to his family. The chess world has lost a bright star today.”



Daniel Naroditsky, born in 1995 in California, had already achieved remarkable milestones at a young age. He won the Under-12 section of the World Youth Chess Championship at just 12 years old and earned the Grandmaster title in 2013 at the age of 18. Alongside his competitive career, Naroditsky was widely respected as a teacher and commentator, producing popular analysis and instructional videos on YouTube and other online platforms.

At the time of his death, his FIDE rating was 2619, with a peak rating of approximately 2647. His expertise extended beyond the chessboard, making him a beloved figure among students and enthusiasts who admired his clear explanations, strategic insights, and approachable teaching style.

The news of his passing spread quickly across the global chess community, with tributes pouring in from international grandmasters, organizers, and fans alike. Many noted that Naroditsky was not just a gifted player, but also a mentor who helped make chess more accessible and engaging for younger generations.

Although the exact circumstances of his death remain unknown, the void he leaves in the chess world is significant. As Anand reflected, “A talented life ended far too soon, but his contributions to chess will remain forever.”
