India achieves historic milestone of 100 GW of installed solar power, becomes a global leader in clean energy, says government.

As of January 31, India has 100.33 GW of installed solar capacity, 84.10 GW under implementation and 47.49 GW under tendering.

This is a big step towards achieving the 500 GW of non-fossil fuel based energy capacity by 2030 target set by PM Narendra Modi.

"Last 10 years have been historic and inspiring. Solar panels, solar parks and rooftop solar projects have brought about a revolution," said Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi.

"So today India has achieved 100 GW of solar energy. In green energy, India is not only self sufficient but is also showing the world the way," the minister added.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is making rooftop solar a household reality and is a game changer in sustainable energy, empowering every home with clean power.

Launched in 2024, the scheme brings the country nearer to 9 lakh rooftop solar installations, taking every household into clean energy.

The capacity of India's solar has grown 3,450% in the last 10 years, from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025.

Hybrid and Round the clock (RTC) renewable energy projects are fast moving, too, 64.67 GW under implementation and tendered; total solar and hybrid projects, 296.59 GW.

This would be 47% of India's renewable energy growth in installed capacity, by solar.

In 2024, 24.5 GW of solar capacity was added, which is more than two times of 2023. Last year, 18.5 GW of utility scale solar capacity was installed, which is 2.8 times of 2023. The top states are Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, which contributed to total utility scale solar installations in the country.

Rooftop solar in India surged last year as 4.59 GW of new capacity were installed, a 53% increase over 2023.

India's solar manufacturing has traveled a long way. Its production capacity for solar modules alone was 2 GW in 2014.

It has been a decade of growth, pushing the production capacity to 60 GW in 2024. India is therefore at the head of the world's biggest solar manufacturers.

"With policy support, India is on track to achieve 100 GW of solar module production by 2030," said the minister.
