Despite the growing opposition to the Parandur Greenfield Airport Project after Vijay’s visit to the site, Stalin government is accelerating the project.
The state will start compensating the affected families in March and the distribution will be completed by May. Ekanapuram village people who are in the proposed airport area have been protesting for 912 days. Several leaders including Vijay have visited the site and supported the protesting villagers.
The state government has given clarifications to the public to allay fears, saying measures will be taken to minimize the impact of the project & a second airport is necessary for Chennai.
Officials have said that affected families will be compensated and resettled soon.
According to revenue department officials, the compensation for land owners will be three times the guideline value. Guideline value varies from place to place -- from as low as 2 lakh per acre to as high as 35 lakh per acre.
Tenders have been floated for the resettlement of affected families which includes alternative housing and essential amenities. Officials have also promised government jobs and other support to the affected families.
"The government is committed to fulfilling its promises and ensuring that the affected families are adequately compensated and rehabilitated. We will make sure their welfare and livelihoods are not compromised," senior official said.
Parandur was shortlisted by the AIADMK government in 2020 and it was found to be better than Pannur. Parandur is closer to the proposed Chennai-Bengaluru expressway and has less number of affected families -- 1,005 in Parandur compared to 1,546 in Pannur. Pannur has high-tension electricity towers, several industries, residential and industrial buildings near Sriperumbudur.
