Under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, the Central Silk Board hosted a three-day (13-15 Jan. 2026) Farmers’ Skill Training (FST) program under Capacity Building Training (CBT), themed 'Women Empowerment through Cocoon Crafting'. Held at the P4-Basic Seed Farm, Manasbal, District Ganderbal, the event was spearheaded by Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Scientist D/Officer-in-Charge, along with his team. This initiative catered to 20 members of Self -Help Groups (SHGs) and centered around the art of cocoon crafting. A highlight of the program was the creation of the Holy Hazratbal Serene through cocoon crafts, marking a first for the trainees. Participants also crafted various other items, which were subsequently showcased in frames. Given its seasonal relevance and the potential for generating income, this craft form is poised to benefit the SHG members engaged in sericulture. These cocoon crafts are also eco-friendly plastic free. By dedicating a portion of their cocoons to crafting, these women can produce distinctive items for sale to tourists enroute to Pehlgam and Sonamerg in the Kashmir Valley.
